Director Identification Number (DIN) – Complete Guide

Every person who wants to become a director in a company registered in India must first obtain a Director Identification Number (DIN).
DIN is a unique eight-digit identification number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to track a director’s involvement across companies.

This blog explains the concept of DIN, the application process, documents required, and related compliances such as DIR-3 KYC.

🧾 1. What is DIN?

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a permanent identification number allotted to an individual under Section 153 of the Companies Act, 2013.
It’s used to identify directors of Indian companies and helps maintain transparency in corporate governance.

  • It is issued once and valid for a lifetime.

  • Each person can have only one DIN.

  • DIN is mandatory before becoming a director in any company or LLP (as DPIN).
